AMERICAN DIRT finds Lydia, a book store owner in Acapulco, crossing paths with Javier, a Mexican drug lord who happens into her store and purchases some of her favorite books. When her journalist husband writes a tell-all about the drug lord, Lydia and her son are forced to try and flee to the United States to escape Javier's wrath. Along the way, they meet many other immigrants who are fleeing problems of their own, and she begins to question not only why they're running, but exactly they're escaping to.
